Never Stop My Brother

Our story together is long but short at the same time. I haven’t seen him in person in over 24 years though I’ve felt he’s never left my side. He could be a complete stranger in a crowd and I’d know where he is, feeling a bond with him stronger than anyone in my life. Some day our story will be told, today it’s still being written but with one sentence sent to me through email from thousands of miles away my baby brother manages to spark something inside of me that has long been gone… “Could Team Lester – be teaming up?”.
Jason is a Triathlete. He was the first physically challenged triathlete to ever complete the Ultraman World Championships and now he’s being nominated in this years ESPYS for Best Male Athlete with a Disability. Words can’t explain the amount of excitement I have for him.
So is it any wonder how this one comment to me in email has sparked my interest in running again? Or at 42 years young, me contemplating training to compete in a triathlon competition? Have I gone crazy, or am I just inspired by the spirit that my brother has? Maybe it’s me seeing the words “Never Stop” on his website that finally burned themselves a home in my brain. Whatever the reason, I’ve lost 44lbs now, quit smoking, changed my diet completely, I don’t watch TV anymore and went on my first 2 mile run in over 9 years the other day and a second one last night. I feel healthier than ever and all I can think about is my brother and his unique challenges and that… will Never Stop.
“I’ve always said whatever I’ve accomplished is not about Jason Lester,” said Lester, who competes in triathlon with the sole purpose of inspiring others. “It’s a team effort”. Courtesy of West Hawaii Today newspaper
